Notes from a launch week
One product, one week, and the parts nobody writes up. Field notes from a December launch — what worked, what wobbled, and what held.
Monday — the room
The venue was wrong until two in the afternoon and right by five; the difference was taking half the furniture out. First lesson of every launch week: the product needs less around it than anyone believes. The evening preview ran long because two editors stayed past their slots — which is the only kind of overrun worth having.
Wednesday — the wobble
Courier failure on the press kits. Twenty minutes of quiet panic, then the fix that has never once come from a process document: someone senior takes a taxi. Kits arrived warm from the boot of a cab, and not one recipient knew. The plan is not the thing; the people holding it are.
Friday — what held
By Friday the coverage had started to move and the founder had stopped reading it, which is the correct order of events. What held all week: the one-line brief we wrote in November. Every decision, down to the taxi, got made against it. Write the line before you book the room.
